what are the different types of facelift?

Skin Only Facelift

A skin-only facelift lifts and tightens the skin of the face by making incisions around the ears and sometimes extending into the hairline. The skin is separated from the underlying tissues, pulled upward and backward, and the excess skin is trimmed before the incisions are closed.

The main disadvantage is that the lift depends primarily on the skin rather than the deeper facial tissues. This can make the result less effective for significant jowls and deeper facial sagging. Because the skin carries much of the tension, it may stretch over time, potentially causing the results to fade and the scars to widen or become more noticeable.

SMAS Facelift (Mini Lift)

An SMAS facelift lifts the Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System, a deeper layer of tissue beneath the skin, to improve sagging in the cheeks and lower face. Also known as a mini facelift, it is better suited for patients with early or mild facial aging.

The main limitation is that the amount of movement of the deeper tissues can be restricted by the surgical technique. While an SMAS facelift or mini-lift can improve some facial sagging and nasolabial folds, it may be less effective for significant jowls and advanced lower-face laxity compared with a deep plane facelift. Mini-lifts in particular may also provide less dramatic or shorter-lasting improvement in patients with more advanced aging.

Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane facelift is performed through discreet incisions around the ears and hairline. Instead of simply pulling the skin, the deeper tissues of the face are released, lifted and gently redraped over the newly lifted contours.

Its main advantage is a more natural and comprehensive lift. Because the deeper tissues are repositioned, a deep plane facelift can effectively improve jowls, sagging cheeks, and jawline laxity while placing less tension on the skin. This can result in a smoother, more natural-looking, and longer-lasting rejuvenation.

How to prepare for a deep Plane Facelift?

Prepare well, heal well, and let your deep plane facelift do its best work.

  • Schedule a consultation to discuss your goals, medical history, medications, and the areas you would like to improve.  A face to face consultation is best to assess the skin quality and laxity.
  • Complete any requested medical tests before surgery to make sure you are fit for the procedure.
  • Review your medications and supplements with your surgeon. Some medications and supplements may need to be stopped before surgery because they can increase bleeding.
  • Stop smoking and vaping well before surgery, as nicotine can interfere with blood flow and wound healing.
  • Avoid alcohol in the days leading up to surgery, as it may increase bruising and interfere with recovery.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and stay well hydrated before surgery to support healing.
  • Arrange someone to accompany you home and stay with you during the initial recovery period.
  • Prepare your recovery area with comfortable pillows, easy-to-eat foods, medications, and other essentials within easy reach.
  • Wash your hair and face as instructed before surgery, since you may be advised not to wash or manipulate the surgical area immediately afterward.
  • Do not eat or drink after the instructed fasting time before surgery, particularly if general anesthesia or sedation is planned.
  • Follow your surgeon's instructions carefully. Your individual preparation may differ depending on your health, medications, and the type of anesthesia being used.
