Earlobe Repair Surgery Before and After

Ear Lobe Surgery

What is Earlobe Repair?

Earlobe repair is a minor surgical procedure to fix torn, stretched, or damaged earlobes. This is commonly caused by heavy earrings, trauma, accidental tearing, or gauging (ear stretching). The surgery restores the natural shape of the earlobe and allows patients to re-pierce their ears safely if desired.

The procedure is quick, done under local anesthesia, and leaves minimal, barely noticeable scars when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon.

Who needs Ear Lobe Repair Surgery?

  • Torn or split earlobes from earrings or trauma

  • Stretched piercings due to heavy or large earrings or due to aging

  • Overgrown keloids or scar tissue from piercings

  • Stretched earlobes from gauges or tribal earrings

  • Asymmetry or irregular earlobe shape

How is Ear Lobe Repair Surgery done?

Before surgery:  Medications that cause bleeding or easy bruisability like anticoagulants should be stopped 1-2 weeks prior to surgery.

Anesthesia: local anesthesia

Incision: Earlobe repair is a minor procedure done under local anesthesia where the stretched or torn part of the earlobe is carefully trimmed or reshaped. The edges of the tissue are then sutured together to restore a normal earlobe shape and close enlarged or split piercing holes. After healing, the earlobe regains a more natural contour, though re-piercing is usually done later in a slightly different position.

Procedure Time:  1-2 hours depending on severity

What to Expect After Ear Lobe Repair

  • Post-op Course: Oral antibiotics and pain reliever are taken for a week.  Expect swelling for 1-2 weeks.  Frequent ice compress is advised to help with the swelling.

  • Suture Removal: sutures are removed after 7-10 days

  • Downtime: 7-14 days for swelling; most can return to work after procedure

  • Scarring:  scars are usually visible for 1-3 months and will gradually fade over 6-12 months.

  • Results: you will see immediate results after surgery, but you cannot wear earrings after surgery since the hole is closed.  Re-piercing is done ideally after 3-6 months to ensure strength of the tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you fix a completely split earlobe?
A: Yes. Even fully torn earlobes can be reconstructed to look natural using fine plastic surgery techniques.

Q: Can I wear earrings again?
A: Yes, but only after 3- 6 months of healing. Dr. Aicee will guide you on safe re-piercing to prevent recurrence.

Q: Will the scar be visible?
A: Scars are very small and fade over time, especially when repaired by a skilled plastic surgeon.

Q: Is the procedure painful?
A: No — it’s done under local anesthesia and is very well tolerated with minimal downtime.
